NYC Subway Safety Guide: Seven Tips Every Rider Should Know

Riding the New York City subway is often the fastest and most convenient way to get around the city, but navigating it safely is just as important as knowing which train to take. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a daily commuter, these safety tips will help ensure your subway experience is smooth and secure.

1. Stay Back from the Platform Edge

Subway platforms can get crowded, and trains can come rushing in unexpectedly, and in New York City, there are no barriers between the platform and the tracks. Always stand behind the yellow line and avoid standing too close to the edge of the platform. If you’re traveling with children, keep them close and ensure they stay behind the safety line as well.

2. Pay Attention to Empty Subway Cars

If you notice a completely empty subway car during a busy commute, there’s likely a reason. It could be uncomfortably hot, have a strong odor, or worse, an issue involving safety. When in doubt, opt for a car with other passengers.

3. Feel Unsafe? Change Cars

If something or someone in your subway car is making you feel unsafe, don’t hesitate to switch cars when the train stops at the next station. Use the doors connecting the cars if it’s safe and legal to do so or simply exit your car and enter another before the train departs.

4. Cell Service and Wi-Fi Availability

Most subway stations have cell service and free Wi-Fi, allowing you to stay connected while waiting for your train. However, once the train is in motion, you won’t have service when traveling between stops. You will be able to quickly look something up while the train is at designated stops. Plan ahead by downloading maps or bookmarking your route before your trip.

5. Remain Aware of Your Surroundings

While it’s tempting to immerse yourself in your phone or a good book during your ride, it’s crucial to stay alert. Keep your belongings close, especially during rush hour, and be mindful of your surroundings.

6. Know Your Route and Stops in Advance

Familiarize yourself with your route ahead of time. Knowing your stop and which direction to head can help you avoid confusion, especially if you lose cell service during your ride. If you need to check directions, do so while waiting at the station where you still have access to Wi-Fi. There is also at least one subway map in every car. And, despite stereotypes, New Yorkers are quite friendly and most are happy to help you navigate the subway.

7. Avoid Engaging with Suspicious or Aggressive Individuals

Unfortunately, not everyone you encounter in the subway will have good intentions. If someone makes you uncomfortable, the best approach is often to ignore them. Avoid eye contact and move away if possible. Engaging with such individuals can escalate the situation.

Additional Tips for a Smooth Ride:

  • Keep Your Belongings Secure: Use a crossbody bag or backpack worn in front to deter pickpockets.
  • Travel Light: Crowded subways are not ideal for carrying large items or multiple bags.
  • Have Your MetroCard or OMNY Ready: Fumbling for your fare can make you a target. Prepare it in advance to move quickly through the turnstiles.

By staying vigilant and following these tips, you’ll navigate the subway system like a pro and, most importantly, stay safe while doing so. The New York City subway is a lifeline for millions of people every day, and with a bit of preparation, it can be a safe and efficient part of your journey.
